The FedEx Trade Index (1) indicates that most small businesses in the United States believe that expanding trade between the United States and other countries/regions can create opportunities and employment opportunities for the United States. It tracks the impact of international trade on the small business sector of the US economy. This survey commissioned by FedEx (New York: FDX) and conducted by Morning Consult found that 82% of small business decision-makers in the United States believe that trade growth between the United States and other countries/regions will improve the overall economy. Three quarters (75%) of these small businesses believe that expanding trade will create opportunities and employment opportunities. However, some respondents indicated that they were unable to fully utilize the benefits of trade: 70% of companies engaged in international trade stated that customs regulations posed obstacles to their international e-commerce business.

The autumn 2020 FedEx Trade Index also included a supplementary survey conducted in Canada, providing insights from the business community in two of the three markets of the US Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA), which came into effect in July 2020. The vast majority (91%) of small businesses in the United States support USMCA, which is higher than 84% of the autumn 2019 FedEx Trade Index. Among Canadian survey respondents, small businesses also strongly support the agreement, with 86% of them. Indicates support for USMCA.

Other insights include: 85% of small businesses in the United States agree that plans to address job retraining and skill enhancement should be a priority to help the United States participate in global competition.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, 47% of small businesses have reported investing in new technologies.

Most respondents stated that using technology to create better customer (74%) and employee (71%) experiences is crucial for the success of their small businesses and the recovery from COVID-19.
